Have you ever wondered how mobile marketing strategies can help your app rise to the top of the App Store search results? In this series of articles, we'll dive into the mysteries of Apple's algorithm and reveal tips and tricks to boost your ranking.
Apple's and Google's search algorithms may be black boxes, but by analyzing enough data, patterns emerge. I actively study search results to reverse engineer how the stores decide which apps to rank and share my findings here for you to learn from.
Let's start with a popular keyword: "Calendar". This term is not only widely used but also highly competitive. Apple's own app dominates the search results, hard-coded at the top of the list. But what about everyone else?
At first glance, we see that Google has impressive download numbers and includes the term in its app name. No surprise it ranks #2. But what's curious is that #3 has fewer downloads than #4. Let's take a closer look.
App #3 is Calendar · by Luni, which cleverly incorporates the keyword into its name. We estimate 32.5K downloads in the last 30 days. Meanwhile, #4 is Calendars: Planner & Reminders by Readdle, with almost double the estimated downloads and also mentioning the keyword.
If downloads were the only factor, we'd expect Readdle's app to take the #3 spot. So why doesn't it?
The answer lies in how Luni's app uses the "calendar" term exclusively, giving the algorithm all possible weight for that single keyword. This boosts its ranking despite having fewer downloads.
This lesson can be applied to your own mobile marketing strategy: focus on a specific keyword and optimize accordingly. But remember, this comes with a trade-off – you'll miss out on other important modifiers, making it harder to rank for those terms.
When starting out, consider focusing on different terms temporarily. The algorithm will remember, and you can always adjust later.
What You Need to Know
Downloads may be crucial for ranking in your category, but they're not the only factor the algorithm considers. First, ensure your keywords are in the right place.
