The mobile marketing landscape has undergone significant changes in recent years, and one of the most noticeable consequences is the rising cost of monthly packages. According to government officials, mobile phone operators have increased prices by up to 50% during the current financial year. This staggering increase is attributed to various economic pressures affecting the telecom sector.

Fuel prices have skyrocketed by an astonishing 158%, inflation has soared by 77%, and the Pakistani rupee has depreciated by 44% against the US dollar, making it increasingly difficult for operators to maintain their revenue streams. Additionally, policy rates have surged by 214%, significantly increasing financing costs for telecom providers.

In a written response to a Senate inquiry, Minister for Information Technology and Telecommunications Shaza Fatima Khawaja revealed that mobile operators have gradually increased prices of their monthly packages in the range of 20% to 50%. This includes increases from Rs. 999 to Rs. 1499 and from Rs. 1500 to Rs. 1799 during FY 2024–25.

Despite these rising costs, the average annual revenue growth of the mobile industry over the last five years has remained stagnant at only 9%, compared to an average annual inflation rate of 17% between 2020 and 2024. This imbalance has resulted in value erosion across the mobile telecom industry, making it essential for operators to adapt their pricing strategies to remain competitive.

In terms of regulatory approvals, Minister Khawaja emphasized that under the Pakistan Telecommunication (Re-organization) Act, 1996, and Mobile Tariff Regulations, 2026, operators declared as having Significant Market Power (SMP) must obtain prior approval from PTA before revising tariffs. As Jazz has been designated an SMP operator in the retail mobile telecom market, its tariffs are subject to approval by the Authority.

Meanwhile, consumers are feeling the pinch of these increased costs, with monthly packages now ranging from Rs. 1200 to Rs. 2800 and weekly packages increasing from Rs. 300 to almost Rs. 700. As the mobile marketing landscape continues to evolve, it is crucial for operators to strike a balance between revenue growth and consumer affordability.
