As Microsoft Gaming CEO and Xbox lead Phil Spencer presents alongside other major entertainment companies at CCXP 2023, we caught up with him to discuss the future of Xbox, and Microsoft's evolving strategy going forward. With a busy year behind them, having attended regulators on their massive acquisition of Activision-Blizzard, and events in LA before the summer, Gamescom in Germany, Blizzcon 2023 in Anaheim, and the Final Fantasy Fan Festival as part of a renewed partnership with Square Enix, Spencer was infectiously brimming with energy during our interview.

The Xbox Platform: Constant Scrutiny and Confusing Messaging

The Xbox platform is under constant scrutiny from every angle. Part of it is because of how differently Microsoft does things, but part of it is definitely self-inflicted. Microsoft is known for confusing messaging, and creating a perception of inconsistent commitments. This perhaps accentuates the difficulty of running what has become, arguably, the most diverse gaming portfolio in the history of the industry.

Xbox Game Pass: Bringing Innovation to Future Console Hardware

When asked about Xbox CFO Tim Stuart's recent comments regarding Xbox Game Pass, Spencer clarified that there are no plans to bring Game Pass to PlayStation or Nintendo. Instead, he emphasized the importance of innovating for people who've made a commitment to the Xbox hardware platform. "I want us to continue to innovate, so people on our console feel like we're making investments in console that matches their commitment they're making to us."

Spencer also touched on future innovations in Xbox console hardware, stating that there is a roadmap of new developments coming. He highlighted the importance of listening to customer feedback and watching how customers use cloud gaming, which has sparked innovations that weren't initially planned.

Cloud Gaming: A Roadmap for the Future

One area where innovation has been sparked is with cloud gaming. Initially, Xbox Cloud was seen as a way to get onto mobile gaming, but globally, many people are using it on consoles. This has led to new ideas and developments that didn't exist before. Spencer emphasized that there's a roadmap of these innovations coming, and the company is always listening to customer feedback.

The Future of Mobile Game Development

As Microsoft continues to evolve its strategy in mobile game development, it will be interesting to see how they apply their learnings from Xbox Cloud gaming to the mobile space. With a unified focus on innovation across hardware and services, there's much to look forward to in the future of mobile game development.
