In today's digital age, delivering an exceptional app user experience is crucial for any email service provider looking to stay ahead of the curve. Google Gmail, the world's most widely used email service, has long been a benchmark for email management features. However, despite its popularity, the Gmail mobile app faces several UI/UX challenges that hinder user satisfaction and efficiency.
Project Overview
To address these challenges, I embarked on a four-week project to revamp the Google Gmail mobile app's usability, focusing on enhancing the overall user experience. My goal was to identify pain points and propose solutions that would improve navigation, search functionality, and label management features.
The Problem
Despite being the most popular email service provider, Gmail faces several UI/UX challenges that need to be addressed to ensure better performance and increased user satisfaction. These challenges include:
- Confusing account switching process
- Limited customization options
- Inefficient search filter
- Lack of label handling management
Project Objective
The objective of this case study was to address these identified pain points and improve the overall user experience for the Google Gmail mobile app.
Favorable Outcomes
To measure the success of this project, I tracked key performance indicators such as:
- Increase in user ratings on the Play Store
- Reduction in user drop-offs and app uninstalls
Design Thinking Approach
I employed Stanford University's Design Thinking methodology to guide my approach. This iterative, user-centered approach ensured that the solutions were grounded in user research and insights.
Research Goal
My research goal was to understand user behavior and identify pain points. I categorized my research into three main parts:
- User behavior
- User pain points
Competitive Analysis
Before proposing solutions, I conducted a competitive analysis of three other email service providers to identify best practices and areas for improvement.
Simplified User Flow
I created a simplified user flow map to evolve and improve the user experience. This map outlined how users would navigate the app, from managing emails to taking advantage of additional features like Google Meet.
Solution & Prototypes
Based on my analysis, I proposed solutions to address the six pain points identified:
- Simplified account switching
- Improved label management
- Enhanced search filter
- Increased control over label handling management
- Expanded email action handling in the notification bar
- User-friendly approach to Google Meet icon
Existing vs. Proposed Designs
I presented existing and proposed designs for each solution, highlighting the improvements made to align with the app's current design system and style.
By applying Design Thinking principles and conducting comprehensive user research, I was able to identify pain points and propose solutions that would enhance the overall user experience of the Google Gmail mobile app. The favorable outcomes expected from this project include increased user ratings on the Play Store, reduced user drop-offs and app uninstalls, and a more efficient and user-satisfactory email experience.
