The mobile game development industry has witnessed significant fluctuations in recent times, and the latest report from Circana provides valuable insights into the state of the market. According to Mat Piscatella, a leading expert on video game spending, the US video games market reached $4.51 billion in revenue last month, marking a 15% decline compared to the same period last year.
In terms of hardware sales, the picture is even more stark, with a whopping 45% year-over-year drop to $205 million. This represents the lowest January spending in this category since January 2020, when it stood at $131 million. Game content sales also took a hit, falling by 12% to $4.11 billion, while revenue from accessories declined by 28% to $194 million.
Interestingly, mobile game development saw a glimmer of hope, with non-subscription spending rising by 13%. However, this growth was unable to offset declines in other areas, highlighting the challenges faced by developers in the current market.
Looking at the top-grossing games, Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 emerged as the best-selling premium game in January, ranking number one on PlayStation and two on Xbox. Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth made a significant leap, jumping from #56 to #3 thanks to its launch on Steam. The Remake & Rebirth bundle also saw a surge, moving up 249 spots from December.
Other notable titles included Minecraft, Marvel's Spider-Man 2, Helldivers 2, The Crew: Motorfest, and It Takes Two, all of which made appearances in the top 20. Donkey Kong Country Returns was the only new release to make the charts, debuting at #8 (note that Nintendo only provides data on physical copies, excluding digital sales).
In terms of console performance, all three major players – Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5 – saw significant year-over-year declines in revenue. However, the PlayStation 5 remained the best-selling console in the US by both dollar and unit sales, while the Xbox Series X|S ranked second in dollars and the Nintendo Switch ranked second in units.
On the mobile front, Monopoly Go! continued to dominate the market, ranking number one in revenue last month. ReelShort, an interactive story app, broke into the top 10, while other top-grossing titles included Royal Match, Roblox, Candy Crush Saga, Last War: Survival, Whiteout Survival, Township, Coin Master, and Pokémon TCG Pocket.
