As the mobile game development world continues to evolve, one league in particular is facing stiff challenges in its second season. The 3-on-3 basketball league, Unrivaled, has seen its ratings plunge significantly compared to its inaugural year, averaging only 175,000 viewers across TNT and truTV for its opening slate.

The campus just beyond Miami's city limits was quieter during the opening weekend of the league's second season, with empty seats inside the renovated arena. The fan fest outside was less of a throng and more of a collection of supporters. This stark contrast to last year's sold-out crowd of 870 eager eyes is a major concern for the league.

Despite the low viewership numbers, Unrivaled has other revenue streams to fall back on, such as ticket sales and merchandise. In fact, merchandise sales from September through opening weekend were up over 50% year over year, with ticket revenue also seeing a significant increase of 40% for the opening weekend thanks to the added seats and games.

The league has expanded its player pool in Year 2, adding more talent to the court. However, it has also lost some stars along the way, including Sabrina Ionescu who will be "unable to participate in on-court activities" due to an injury sustained during the WNBA season. Other big names like Angel Reese and Jewell Loyd have also decided not to return.

Some players have opted for a different path, choosing to join Project B, a worldwide 5-on-5 league set to begin play in November of this year. Alyssa Thomas explained that she sees Unrivaled as an opportunity, but ultimately chose the 5-on-5 format because it's better suited for her development.

The biggest question facing Unrivaled is whether it's sustainable in the long term. With a six-year media-rights deal with TNT reportedly worth nine figures, but parent company Warner Bros. Discovery able to opt out after three years, the league's future is uncertain. Can Unrivaled find a way to revitalize its viewership and secure its place in the mobile game development world?
