The world of mobile apps has revolutionized the way we interact, communicate, and access information on-the-go. With billions of people relying on their smartphones for daily tasks, it's crucial that app developers prioritize creating accessible experiences for users with disabilities. However, there is a lack of research on the real-world challenges developers face in implementing mobile accessibility features. This study aims to bridge this gap by analyzing 15 years of Stack Overflow questions, providing insights into the trends and challenges faced by Android and iOS developers.
Introduction
The proliferation of smartphones has made it essential for app developers to cater to a wide range of users, including those with disabilities. Prior research has explored mobile app accessibility in various ways, but there is limited knowledge on the real-world challenges in implementing accessibility features. To address this gap, we conducted a large-scale empirical study of mobile accessibility discussions on Stack Overflow.
Goals & Research Questions
This study aims to understand how extensively mobile app developers seek assistance in incorporating accessibility features into their apps and the key trends, topics, and challenges therein. We address these objectives through three research questions:
- How have mobile app accessibility questions on Stack Overflow grown over the years? This question seeks to understand how often developers seek help from the community to make their mobile apps accessible.
- What are the characteristics of mobile app accessibility questions on Stack Overflow? This question involves analyzing the metadata associated with mobile accessibility questions, including popular tags and statistical measures for attributes such as score, views, answers, comments, and response times.
- What are the challenges associated with mobile app accessibility development? Through this question, we aim to identify the range of mobile accessibility challenges that app developers discuss.
Related Work
This section reports on research studies that have examined mobile app accessibility. Previous studies have analyzed Stack Overflow discussions for mobile accessibility trends and challenges, but our study provides a broader perspective by examining iOS and Android questions, focusing on general mobile accessibility rather than specific platforms or technologies.
By understanding the trends and challenges in mobile app accessibility, developers can better prepare to create inclusive experiences for users with disabilities. This research can also inform tool support, educational resources, and research directions, ultimately driving improvements in developer practices.
